The end result! |
Hey guys! Today I'm going to show you how I made this slate roof for my dollhouse. All you need for this tutorial is;
- cereal box cardboard
- sandpaper
- PVA glue/clear drying glue
- scissors
- acrylic paint
- paintbrushes
- a ruler
- quite a bit of patience!

The first thing I did was draw some horizontal guidelines on the roof, spaced 1.5cm apart from each other. This will help when we begin to stick the tiles onto the roof.
Then, I did the same with the cardboard, only making the lines 1.7cm apart from each other. Next, simply cut the strips of cardboard out (this may take a while)!

Once I had all of my strips cut out, I began to cut slits in them, but not completely cutting them all the way through. These cuts should measure around 1.5cm apart, but they don't have to be exact.

Now comes the fun part! I took my sandpaper and I started texturing all of the tiles. I focused mostly around the outside edges of the tiles, as that's where slate seems to have most of their weathering. This will take you a
long time, so it's a good idea to have some music going on in the background, to keep you from going insane!

Then, once I had my tiles textured, I began sticking them onto my dollhouse's roof with PVA glue. It is important to start sticking your tiles on at the bottom of your roof and then work your way up to the top. This is so each layer can have that nice overhang we talked about!
After I had stuck all of the tiles onto my roof, I began cutting out more strips of cardboard (don't worry, you don't have to texture these) to use to decorate around my little windows and the very top of the roof. This is optional, but here's just how I did mine.
Then, I took my acrylic paint and I mixed it to become a dark grey colour and then I painted it over all of the tiles and decorations on my roof. I used a large brush to get the initial colour on the tiles, then I went back with a smaller brush to fill in any spots that I had missed. And here is what you should end up with! :
